Bigfoot in Mouth Syndrome (A Nicki Minaj Song “Review”)

Writer: Eirian Naomi OmidEirian Naomi Omid

As much as I hate to say it, I think FOBI got the best of Nicki Minaj.

A cousin of FOMO, FOBI stands for “Fear of Being Irrelevant.” It’s an ugly monster and it makes people do stupid things.

You see, back in the day, 2009-2012, Nicki Minaj was on the come up and it irritated other female rappers like Lil Kim and Remy Ma.

So, FOBI gobbled them up, and they started spending all their creative time concocting diss tracks towards Nicki Minaj.

And now Nicki Minaj is heading down that same path.

And as a long time fan, it’s a hard, cringey thing to watch from the sidelines.

Because, back in the day, Nicki Minaj said she didn’t have time to waste on rap beefs. She used to very briefly touch upon topics in a very nuanced way. She wouldn’t use names, and even if she did, you never really noticed.

I’m pretty sure the song “Stupid Hoe” is Nicki’s response to Lil Kim coming after her over and over again, and that’s a song that still just sounds like it’s aimed at haters in general.

But I guess Nicki has the free time to “waste” on rap beefs now…

When “Bigfoot” dropped, I wasn’t really interested in listening to it. I don’t really like what Nicki has become and don’t really care for her newer music.

I also assumed that it was going to be about her Bigfoot. You know… like a metaphor about no one being able to fill her big shoes.

Boy was I wrong.

“Bigfoot” is a sloppy diss track about Megan Thee Stallion. It even sounds like she was wasted when she recorded it.

But, I’m not going to dive into lyrics.

It’s not worth our time.

I do, however, think the saga is wildly interesting.

Comparing the Lil Kim-Nicki Feud to the Nicki Minaj-Megan Feud, I can’t help but see a handful of similarities.

Lil Kim worked with Nicki Minaj when Nicki was still underground. Then, when Nicki got popular, Kim began dissing her. And, ironically, it through Lil Kim deeper into “irrelevancy.”

It’s hard to enjoy music when all the artist does is tear others down.

Nicki Minaj worked with Megan Thee Stallion when Megan was still just coming up. Then, truthfully, Megan got caught up in the Nicki-Cardi Feud and started dissing Nicki on a semi-regular basis.

But that was years ago.

And, I don’t know what actually spurred Nicki Minaj to finally retaliate.

However, the fact that the woman who used to have lyrics saying she didn’t have time for shit like this is now spending her time making and releasing songs like “Bigfoot” definitely doesn’t make me interested in anything else she creates.

Somehow, Nicki Minaj has seemingly become the very type of rapper she always used to hate.

So, what can be learned from this shocking turn of events?

*** Stay true to yourself and never lose sight of who you are. Move with integrity. Don’t get caught up in the Fear of Being Irrelevant. And you will do just fine. ***

Love,

E.
