Happy Black History Month - Kendrick Pantsed the Halftime Show but At Least Doechii Won Some Grammys

Writer: Eirian Naomi OmidEirian Naomi Omid

I’m just going to say it: Kendrick pantsed the Halftime Show.

I actually wasn’t sure what I was going to write a Black History Month blog post about until a friend told me I should watch the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show because it was that controversial.

Kendrick Lamar had an opportunity to do something really special and somehow, in what I can only describe as an angsty act of rebellion, put on a show that was simultaneously a protest against the halftime show in the first place and a subliminal message to stay chained to the things that oppress us.

I won’t go into more detail than that.

It was really truly awful.

And somehow super racist. Which is ironic because it was posed as an attempt not to be.

The racism is an epidemic right now.

But, at least Doechii won a Grammy.

Well, actually, she won two.

She won a Grammy for her album AND she won album of the year.

I wish Doechii had done the Halftime Show. She would have made much better use of the 13 minute time slot.

Doechii is literally the reigning Queen of Rap. (More on that in a separate blog post.) And I am unbelievably excited to tears that she won those awards this year.

She is definitely one of my heroes.

She is small framed, and shows out for all the girls that were told that they were too weird, and all the girls that were were told that they’d never be good enough.

Doechii is the lady super hero that hip-hop truly needs right now.

And I’m glad that a dark skinned woman finally got her flowers.

So, be a Doechii, not a Kendrick.

Do not let generational trauma haunt you and control your existence. Do not let the past define you and oppress you.

Honor your ancestors by rising out of that mud and letting your beauty shine. Like the radiant lotus flower you are.

Because the only way out of the darkness is to move forward.

Happy Black History Month love.

E.
